R-value: How Effective is your Insulation?

Most older homes built before 1960 have minimal or no insulation in the attic.  How does the insulation in your attic look?  Can you see the floor joists?  You probably don’t have enough.

R-value measures how well insulation resists heat.  The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation.  R-value is determined by the type of material, its density, and its thickness when installed.

We exceed recommended R-values and install at least an R-49 in our customers’ attics.  Improving the insulation in your attic will increase the R-value, making your home more efficient, keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer during winter months while saving you money on energy costs.

Owens Corning: Industry Leader in Blown-in Fiberglass Insulation

An increasingly popular choice for attic insulation is loose-fill or blown-in fiberglass insulation.  The Owens Corning AttiCat Expanding Blown-in Insulation System offers the perfect way to improve the R value in your attic by blowing in more insulation on top of existing insulation without having to deal with the hassle and danger of removing it.  The loose fiberglass material conforms to the shape of your attic and fills in gaps in traditional fiberglass batting and around recessed light fixtures to slow air flow and energy exchange between the attic and the conditioned living spaces of your home.  Energy Star estimates that the average homeowner can save up 20% annually in heating and cooling costs by addressing air leaks in their home.

Owens Corning is an Energy Star Partner and their High Performance Fiberizing Technology offers the higher R-value per inch available on the market today, which means you use less material and spend less money to achieve the insulating performance you desire.  Unlike other types of blown-in insulation like cellulose, fiberglass does not settle and will keep its R-value over time.  Owens Corning also leads the industry in using post-consumer content by producing their fiberglass from 50% recycled content.

Owens Corning fiberglass insulation products are naturally non-combustible and mold/fungus resistant without the using of chemical treatments.  Blown-in fiberglass insulation will not retain moisture and is formaldehyde free.

Our Attic Insulation Installation Process

  1. 1 Your new insulation materials arrive.

The morning your project begins, we’ll arrive with our equipment and the insulation material(s) you’ve chosen.

  2. 2 We protect your home.

We’ll cover attic windows, vents, chimney components, heating and cooling units, recessed lighting cans, and any other electrical elements with plastic to protect them from insulation over spray. We seal dust work and all other opening so insulation particles cannot leak into the living spaces of your home.

  3. 3 We install your insulation.

Our team has the training and experience to operate the insulation blowing equipment to achieve the proper density of insulation and to achieve the R-value you desire. The process is quick, taking only a few hours, and will not disrupt your daily routine.

  4. 4 We clean up your attic.

We meticulously clean your attic, remove all protective materials and any debris that may have accumulated during the installation.

  5. 5 Your Project Manager Does a Final Inspection.

After your attic insulation has been installed, your HWC Project Manager will inspect the entire project and ensure it meets your local building and fire codes and our strict standards.
