How Hail & Wind Damages Your Home's Siding

by Hoffman Weber Construction, on June 09, 2020

Severe weather can have a number of different affects on your home's siding depending on what type of siding you have on your home.  The bigger the hail and the faster the wind is blowing, the more damage is likely to occur.

Hail Hand

Hail's Affects on Siding

Hail will create circular or oval dents on aluminum and wood siding and can also chip paint from metal, wood and fiber-cement siding products. Chipped paint on wood and fiber-cement siding is not only an eye soar, it can also leave the siding material exposed to moisture which can lead to wood rot and premature aging.  Vinyl siding won’t be dented by hail, but in colder temperatures or if the siding is older, the vinyl may be less pliable and more likely to be cracked or chipped by large, wind driven hail.

Wind Damage to Siding

Wind can exacerbate the affects of hail damage.  In extreme cases, strong winds can also lift siding panels away from the wall, disrupting the tongue and groove system that makes them water tight.  This, along with holes or cracks in the siding from hail damage, leaves your home vulnerable to water damage.  If your damage is limited to a few siding panels, individual panels can be removed and replaced without the need for residing your entire house.  However, if you are concerned about more widespread damage, then it is important to have your property inspected by a contractor who can spot potential problems and offer guidance for any necessary repairs.
