James Hardie is the oldest and most respected manufacturer of fiber cement siding. We trust it will perform as advertised. It has been installed on more than 8 million homes.

What fiber cement siding styles, profiles, and textures are available?

James Hardie siding is available in lap, shingle and vertical panels. Lap siding comes in smooth or woodgrain (Cedarmill) and Beaded Cedarmill (woodgrain with a radiused detail along the lower edge of each plank). Shingles are available in staggered and straight edge panels. Vertical panels come in Cedarmill (woodgrain), stucco, Sierra 8 (woodgrain with vertical grooves to resemble T1-11 plywood), and smooth.

How does the installed cost of Hardie siding compare to engineered wood, vinyl, steel, and solid wood?

The installed price for James Hardie siding typically is comparable to engineered wood siding, more expensive than vinyl siding and less expensive than brick or synthetic stucco.

Where is Hardie siding used in Minnesota manufactured?

James Hardie siding is made in Illinois, Texas, Florida, and New Mexico. Siding installed in Minnesota typically comes from the plant in Peru, IL.

How is Hardie siding finished? Does it come primed?

Hardie siding is primed with a 100 percent acrylic primer at the factory. ColorPlus pre-finishing is said to last three to four times longer than on-site paint.

What finish colors are available? Including dark colors?

Hardie siding comes pre-primed or finished in any of 23 standard colors, including dark, neutral, warm, cool, light and fresh palettes.

Can Hardie siding be prefinished before installation?

Yes. All Hardie siding products are spray primed on all sides at the factory. Cut edges are sealed during installation.

How is Hardie installed? (fasteners, tools)

Hardie siding is installed with corrosion-resistant galvanized nails.

Does fiber cement siding require special framing or sheathing because of its weight?

Hardie siding may be nailed to plywood or OSB sheathing or to properly braced (single-wall-construction) wood or steel framing.

How will you trim my home if I choose Hardie siding?

Hardie makes a full line of trim for use at soffits, corners, windows, and doors. It also is compatible with wood, engineered wood, coated aluminum, and vinyl trim products.

Is Hardie siding considered a green building material?

James Hardie siding is durable and resists damage from insects, woodpeckers, and hail.

How do the wood fibers and cement contribute to the product characteristics?

The wood fibers reinforce the panels and make them lighter and less brittle. The cement provides resistance to impact, insects, woodpeckers, and fire. It is Class-A fire rated. Early fiber cement products contained asbestos fibers. Cellulose fibers are used now.

Can Hardie siding by damaged by termites or carpenter ants?

No. Hardie siding is impervious to insect damage.

How does James Hardie siding perform in hail and high winds?

James Hardie siding is impact resistant.

Cement absorbs water. Will my siding swell or split?

Hardie siding is warrantied against deteriorating when properly installed, primed, finished and maintained. This includes sealing ends cut on the job site and maintaining proper clearances above the landscape, paving, and decking.

How long is the Hardie warranty and what does it cover?

James Hardie siding has a 30-year limited lifetime warranty. Prefinished siding carries a 15-year warranty.

Will I be able to match the product years later for remodeling or repairs?

You should have no trouble matching the color, texture or profile of your James Hardie product.

What is the lowest temperature at which you will install Hardie siding?

James Hardie siding may be installed at any temperature but it should be stored in a warm, protected area so it does not become overly brittle.

If I am considering replacing my windows in the next several years, why should I consider doing it in conjunction with the siding?

In construction, windows are installed before the siding. While replacement windows can be installed after construction, it is preferable to replace windows before installing the new siding for maximum sealing.

How should I clean my James Hardie siding?

James Hardie recommends a mild soap solution and a soft brush to clean siding. It recommends against power washing.

How will you protect my family from silica dust when cutting the siding?

Siding will be cut outdoors using power tools equipped with dust collection.
